Seminar on robotics to be held Thursday
released October 04, 2005
Manuela Veloso, a professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University, will be hosting a seminar on robotics at 2p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 2405 Siebel Center. Entitled "Integrated Perception, Cognition, and Action in Teams of Robots," Veloso's seminar will focus on robots' ability to function smoothly as a team as they play robot soccer, including their response to the outside world, behavior, opponent modeling, and even learning.
Veloso has extensively researched action selection algorithms to address uncertain, dynamic, and adversarial environments. Veloso and her students have developed teams of robot soccer agents, which have been RoboCup world champions several times.
Veloso is a Fellow of the American Association of Artificial Intelligence. She is Vice President of the RoboCup International Federation. She was awarded an NSF Career Award in 1995 and the Allen Newell Medal for Excellence in Research in 1997. Veloso was Program Co-Chair of the 2005 National Conference on Artificial Intelligence and is the Program Chair of the 2007 International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence.
