NCSA staffers contribute to hydroinformatics book

released November 10, 2005

Several NCSA staffers co-authored and contributed to a new book published by CRC Press, "Hydroinformatics: Data Integrative Approaches in Computation, Analysis, and Modeling."

The book's lead author is Praveen Kumar, an associated professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Co-authors include Jay Alameda, leader of NCSA's Middleware Division; Peter Bajcsy, a research scientists in NCSA's Automated Learning Group; Mike Folk, leader of the Hierarchical Data Format Group at NCSA; and Momcilo Markus, a research scientist in the Center for Watershed Science at the Illinois State Water Survey and a current NCSA/UIUC Faculty Fellow.

Other contributors to the book include Barbara Minsker, the leader of NCSA's Environmental Engineering, Science, and Hydrology Division, and UIUC graduate students Benjamin Ruddell and Amanda White, both in the department of civil and environmental engineering.

According to the publisher, the book "introduces the tools, approaches, and system considerations necessary to take full advantage of the abundant hydrological data available today. Linking hydrological science with computer engineering, networking, and database science, this book lays a pedagogical foundation in the concepts underlying developments in hydroinformatics."
