SC98 Features BU's ArtWorld
Visitors to the Alliance research booth at Supercomputing '98 will experience a smaller-scale version of Boston University's HiPArt's (High Performance Computing in the Arts) ArtWorld, an interactive virtual environment that integrates art with high-performance computing. Visitors can "play" in a 16th century Martian toy store and "walk" around the virtual art exhibit, interacting with the artists' works.
ArtWorld is a collaborative, networked, multi-user VR environment filled with animated models and sounds created by artists. Originally, the ArtWorld program was run in the CAVE, but at SC98 it will be featured on an ImmersaDesk.
Tom Coffin, Alliance liaison for virtual environments, is one of the many artists and computer programmers whose work is featured in HiPArt's ArtWorld. His piece, "Entrada," is a suspended virtual mobile that is accompanied by music Coffin composed.
Glenn Bresnahan, director of the Office of Information Technology by the Scientific Computing and Visualization group at Boston University and developer of ArtWorld, will be running the ArtWorld demo at SC98 together with Erik Brisson, manager of graphics programming for the group. The demo will be featured once a day beginning November 10. Confirmed demo times will be available at the Alliance booth at the start of the conference.
