A Drone is simply a DCOM object that embodies
a chunk of code performing a specific,
independent function, say for instance a spell
checker. Sanderson contends that developing
Drones is easy. "Actually," he said, "the Drones
give application developers a framework for writing
parallel code. They help programmers to partition
their codes into parallel objects." Developers
can use Symera's AppWizard to generate Drones of
two classes, batch Drones and interactive
Drones. This menu-driven, point-and-click
interface promises to allow novices to quickly develop
their applications as DCOM objects.
Another class of Drones wraps legacy code into
DCOM objects for use within Symera,
encapsulating either command line programs or
actual code (written in any language) into an
envelope that Symera can treat as a DCOM object.
A third class of Drones uses existing ActiveX
objects that can come from previous development
efforts or from one of the many off-the-shelf
ActiveX component markets that are emerging as
Microsoft uses its clout to nurture distribution
channels for software components based on COM
and DCOM technologies.
